Hi,
does anyone play black maire pipes?
I found a set on the internet patterned to 1912 henderson specs for $900
here: http://www.nzbagpipes.co.nz/refurbished_bagpipes.html .
would this be a good buy?

You may have to try them to see, and as with any pipes you should get an independent opinion from somone who knows a good set of drones. I had a PC made from black maire once (so i was told), but was not that impressed - it may have been the overall design, but I had the feeling the wood was not quite right. The wood was fairly dense, hard and smooth (lighter coloured with dark streaking) but didn't seem like a "tone" wood to me. Maybe see if black maire is used for any other instruments?

 Well it/s been 4 months since that post about the maire bagpipes. Did you end up waiting for a name we all recognize? Or did you take a chance?

I've just been waiting for a reputably branded set.

I've given it some thought too. Sounds like a smart move to practice a little patience. I'm in a similar possition in my quest for a set of uillean pipes. :D

I don't know, but these MIGHT be the set made by my piping teacher Bob Everest. He made, and played, a set of black maire and I remember him telling me his sets were based on an x-ray of some Hendersons (whether from 1912 I don't know). Bob has since past away so I can't ask him and I didn't hear where his sets went.

He got positive comments about the tone and the interesting colour of course. But I couldn't comment on how they sounded compared to his black wood sets to give an indication of tonal differences.

I play a set of his african black wood sets.

Anyway, just a note for interests sake.

These sets by Everest sound like something to keep an eye out for.
